Recipes Your Dog Will Love

Remember these are treat recipes not "dog food" so they should not be used in excess.

One of the benefits of making your own treats is that you can control the quality of what goes in the treats.  We suggest using the same quality products as you would if you were making food for yourself.  For example use natural peanut butter rather than products with a lot of added sugar.  Use organic flours and meals if they are available to you.

Here are some potentially harmful ingredients that vets suggest never giving to dogs. These should be omitted from any recipe you try if they are included in the ingredients; 
             Garlic 
             Onions
              Raisins
    Chocolate 
    Grapes

Cheesy Dog Biscuit Treats

Super Simple Chunky Peanut Dog Treats

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 cup chunky natural peanut butter
1 cup non fat milk

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Grease cookie sheets.
In large bowl, combine flour and baking powder. Use another bowl and combine the peanut butter and milk.
Add the milk and peanut butter mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well.
On floured surface, turn out the knead. Roll out to 1/4" thick. Cut out using cookie cutters.
Place on baking sheets and bake for about 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Place on racks to cool then store in airtight containers.

Vegie Thins Dog Biscuit Treats

1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 cups dry milk powder
2 tablespoons dry milk powder (+ more)
1 vegetable cube -- or packet
1/4 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons boiling water (+ more)
1/4 cup safflower oil
1 teaspoon brown sugar not packed
1/4 cups carrots, shredded or -ground
1/2 egg or egg substitute
Additional small flour for dusting  

Preheat oven 300 F.
Dissolve veggie cube or packet in the boiling water.Mix dry ingredients and mix wet ingredients separately, except egg. Pour wet ingredients into dry; mix lightly. Add a well in the center and add the egg. Mix.
Place dough on a lightly floured surface, sprinkle a little flour on top. Roll out to not more than 1/8". To avoid dough sticking to rolling pin, sprinkle a little flour on top of dough. The key is not to use too much flour. They will puff up otherwise.
Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes., turn them over and bake another 10 minutes.

Cool on wire racks. Store in an airtight container.

Simple Dog Treats

A recipe for dog treats with just a few simple ingredients.  Brewers yeast is a natural flea deterrent.

Ingredients

Brewers yeast is a natural anti-flea remedy.
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup brewer’s yeast (available at health-food stores)
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoon vegetable oil (canola is good)
1 cup chicken stock

Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Line a sheet pan with parchment paper (or grease the pan). Mix flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt together in a medium bowl. In another mixing bowl, combine oil and garlic. Alternately add 1 cup chicken stock and flour mixture in 3 parts; mix until well combined. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead about 2 minutes by hand. The dough will be sticky.

Roll dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out various shapes and place on prepared baking sheets. Bake 20 - 25 minutes. Turn off oven, leaving oven door closed. Leave pan in oven for 1 1/2 hours or up to overnight to allow the treats to dry.

Store the treats in zip-closure bags in the refrigerator or you can freeze them as well.

Parmesan Snaps Dog Treats

1 cup rolled oats (such as Quaker)
1/3 cup margarine
1 cup Boiling water
3/4 cup cornmeal
2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
2 teaspoons chicken or beef flavored instant bouillon
1/2 cup milk
1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1 egg, beaten
2 - 3 cups whole wheat flour.
